I mainly like this opening scene because the fact it is dark and mysterious which interprets how the whole scene's going to be, it also makes it a lot more frightening, also the fact she is alone builds a whole more vulnerable and exposed character.
There is also a lot of shadows and
reflections which makes the watcher look for stuff that might not be there and
make them feel a lot more at a disadvantage and on edge during the scene.
I think that the lone swing at the front
of the house is very clever because it implicates that fact that she is without
help and alone.
She is doing a everyday thing like making
some popcorn and watching a film its very disturbing because it shows that she
doesn't assume what's going to happen and neither does the watcher.
I also like the popcorn being used
because as the bags getting bigger on the verge of exploding it could be represented
as a symbol for the tension & pressure building.the fact that the killer always answers a question with a question tells us that he try's not to give so much away and he want to be superior over Casey(Drew Barrymore)
At 2:20 the story and vibe completely changes when the killer say's"i wanna know who i'm LOOKING at" this tells us he is somewhere in or near the house watching her every move which puts the audience on edge.
