still images of location at night

here you can see a test of what the glass will hopefully look like and another of how the killer will be shown.

here is where I (character) will be sitting watching the movie we will probably have some closes up of me so its shows more emotions to how I'm feeling (scared, lonely, frightened)

I love this shot in particular as its very sinister the black against the window works perfectly and this is where we get a closer look at the killer

this is a pov shot of me walking to the kitchen to investigate the strange sounds

the reason why we have this shot so it remind the audience that its Halloween and that's what we want them to focus on

new narrative

new narrative

The first shot will be of the house surrounded by lit pumpkins and Halloween decor which will let the audience know that it is Halloween.

Dark hallow is about a boy "carlton" who is home alone on Halloween because his mum and dad have gone out for the night and Carlton (main character in the film) is stuck at home having to look after his dogs on one of the hectic nights of the year. Carlton chooses to spend his night in watching a couple of frightening movies and eating some popcorn but the night takes an unexpected turn for the worst when he starts hearing noises coming from exterior of his house. Then the two dogs start barking and growling at the door and all of a sudden he hears a glass smash from within his house so he cautiously walks in the direction of the kitchen.

When he gets there he see's glass all over the floor and the back door open and the black light curtains carrying in the wind. As he looks up he see a black figure standing in the door way.

at this piont the titles begin to come in with a loud thud(drum) before every piece of text that comes up then we will reveal the name then just when you think the film is over a hand is violently thrown up against the stain glass window.

the reason we changed the narrative is because we thought we was giving to much a way.

Conventions of Thriller Sub-genres

Conventions of Thriller Sub-genres

Thriller sub-genres is the parts that thriller is broken up into, there are many different types of thriller movies such as Conspiracy thriller, Crime thriller, Disaster thriller, Mystery Thriller, etc. Despite all these being different they still come under the main ‘thriller’ category.

Techno Thriller – This subgenre tends to be fictional most of the time. Where fictional characters such as robots are used and they are attempting to take over the world, this mainly tends to follow science fiction. And there will always be a hero who will save the day and stop the robots taking over the world. Examples of techno thrillers are films such as matrix or i,robot.

Conspiracy Thriller - This consists of a hero or a heroin, who are some sort of detective or journalist, investigating on a large organisation and then seem to be trapped by this organisation. The organisations are then brought down by the main character (the protagonist). This genre always shows good overruling evil in the world, and this genre mainly consists of secrecy of the government or large organisations.

Political Thriller - In this sub-genre the hero or heroin work for the government and the protagonist must prevent something bad from happening scenarios that are commonly used to represent political thrillers are US government elections or preventing a world war from happening.

Religious Thriller - This sub-genre relates to religion and finding the truth behind religion, it's about questions that people may have about religion. It relates to the good and bad of religion and how the good always overcomes the bad.

Psychological Thriller - This plays with the audiences mind, because the protagonist in this sub-genre is always mental or they may also suffer from amnesia. It shows the conflicts of being mental, and what the protagonist has to go through to become normal or remember his past, or they may never recover which creates more suspense within the film.

Disaster Thriller - This follows a certain group of peoples survival after a natural disaster or artificial disasters such as hurricanes, volcanoes, floods and earthquakes. In some disaster films the disaster had been caused by human activities such as atomic bombs and nuclear disasters. This shows us about the future and how man kind may end up and who will survive and who wont.

Crime Thriller - often follows a certain police officer of police force who usually fight crime, and focus on a specific crime or set of crimes, and solving the mystery or tracking down the criminal or criminals they often have no or little violence but more drama throughout. crime thrillers tend to be more slow paced, dramatic and realistic.

dark hallow

is about a boy who is stuck in on Halloween his mum and dad have left home for the holiday and "Carlton" is stuck at home having to look after his two dogs

Carlton sits down to watch a scary movie with some pop corn , Carlton becomes on edge when he hears strange noises outside but he doesn't think anything of it
He then hears his dogs barking ferociously and then hears a glass smash from within the house, he gets up to investigate
As he approaches the kitchen he sees shattered glass all over the floor he looks up to see the curtains blowing and his door wide open, he turns around and pulls he phone out but as he does this the camera cut to the door slightly opening, and a foot stepping out .
As the killer reveals himself from behind the door he sneaks up behind Carlton and throws rope around his neck strangling him whilst dragging him back into the kitchen.
in a struggle Carlton elbow the killer and he lets go he try's to barge past the killer but he grabs Carlton and throws him into the kitchen side
Carlton becomes extremely disorientated a falls to the floor
the killer walks up to Carlton (camera) and his hands are thrown around his neck
then scene the ends and the name of the film is revealed
however just when you think the film is over it cuts to Carlton laying still and without life then his hand begins to move allowing the audience to know he isn't dead ( by doing this it opens the story to a number of possibility and allows the audience wanting to know what happens next....

A high angle shot is where a camera is places so that it looks down upon a subject where as a low angle shot is where a camera looks up at a character A character shot with a high angle will look vulnerable or small and a low angle shot makes a character look more powerful. This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the character
Close-upCUThis is a shot taken of a person’s head from just above the head to the top of the upper chest. It can also be used to film an object at close range. It contains little or no background. This used to introduce a character and allows the character to show emotions. It can be used to heighten tension.

prop and design ideas 3

We want the killer to look as dark and mysterious as possible in order to do this the light will be turned down and the killer will probably be wearing dark clothes and maybe a hoody like this
VVVVVV

we wanted the killers outfit to reflect his behaviour and personality... so by covering his face with a hoody and not knowing who he is tells the audience this person is mysterious.
also by wearing the big, hard wearing boots tell us he's a big, tough character not to be messed with.

Mud Boy Short film (narrative)(MISE EN SCENE)(cinematography)

Mud Boy

Mud Boy is a short 10min film on the BBC film network, the story is about a traumatised young girl who makes a chilling discovery at the bottom of her garden

Meana the young girl is put in a difficult position when she realises her dad is beating her mum whilst dealing with her brother disappearance when digging in the garden Meana comes a cross a dead body but what we don't realise until the end is that she has been seeing his ghost

Meana sees her brother as a ghost but believes he's real. Its a really powerful story on domestic abuse.

her a few screen shots of the film...

titles - here you can see the titles of the film, they haven't be made to be clear or bold which is a problem when a view maybe watching it, it also doesn't catch you eye and make you remember it, so this will have to be something we have to think of when it comes to making our titles.

also this shot establishes where the film is see as you can see the fairly modern London houses also the shot focuses on a key prop that is used with in the film, without giving to much a way, I like the way the spade is standing alone which could be used as a metaphor and liked with the young girl as she clearly feels alone and almost lost with her brother who has gone missing.

in this shot you can see the hand of the dead body this shot allows the audience to focus on it and really makes you feel tense and shows just how serious the plot of the story is, I like the way that its surrounded by mud and DEAD  grass and weeds, the contrast int his shot seems very dull and lifeless which almost symoblis the body ( dead, alone , pail , lifeless )

this is what we would call an Arial shot or its also known a birds eye view shot it allows the audience view the action for difference perspectives all in one shot, in this shot I thinks it really clever at the fact the girl is colourful, bright which resembles life whereas the boy is dull and pail to represent that he is in fact dead.

its almost as if its spilt in two

in this shot the camera has been placed over the shoulder of the police officer this is what we call a high angle shot its usually used to so dominance In the character which is exactly what its doing here, it shows that the woman has authority due to being a law enforcer also could be to show that the woman is older and taller whereas the girl is opposite.

"DECEMBER" short film (cw)

I chose this short film due to its amazing work with it camera  The appearance of the murderer startled me so hard it literally hurt, and when he was loaded into the car I thought "this feels very real".
And not only does it put an amazing twist on Point Of View camera work, it turns out to be a Christmas Tree

In editing the camera has been made to look jolty and bad quality cutting but this plays a key role as to making us this it a person who is extremely disorientated and appears to keep on blacking out due to being hit around the head with an axe

The camera is tall and at an average height of the murderer which suggests its a person however it turns out to be a tree, also when the tree is being cut the camera becomes shaky and wobbly which resembles a body(bones) vibrating (shattering) against the chainsaw

looking at diegetic and non diegetic sound

Diegetic sound

Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film:

  • voices of characters
  • sounds made by objects in the story
  • music represented as coming from instruments in the story space
Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world
Digetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame.  Another term for diegetic sound is actual sound

Non-diegetic sound

Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:

  • narrator's commentary
  • sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
  • mood music
Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space.
The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening.  We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are  represented as coming from outside the space of the story events.  A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy).  Another term for non-diegetic sound is commentary sound.

scream opening

I mainly like this opening scene because the fact it is dark and mysterious which interprets how the whole scene's going to be, it also makes it a lot more frightening, also the fact she is alone builds a whole more vulnerable and exposed character.

There is also a lot of shadows and reflections which makes the watcher look for stuff that might not be there and make them feel a lot more at a disadvantage and on edge during the scene.
I think that the lone swing at the front of the house is very clever because it implicates that fact that she is without help and alone.

She is doing a everyday thing like making some popcorn and watching a film its very disturbing because it shows that she doesn't assume what's going to happen and neither does the watcher.
I also like the popcorn being used because as the bags getting bigger on the verge of exploding it could be represented as a symbol for the tension & pressure building.

the fact that the killer always answers a question with a question tells us that he try's not to give so much away and he want to be superior over Casey(Drew Barrymore)

At 2:20 the story and vibe completely changes when the killer say's"i wanna know who i'm LOOKING at" this tells us he is somewhere in or near the house watching her every move which puts the audience on edge.

props and design ideas 2

These are some of the photos that I took from the London dungeons and we are thinking about including them in our film due to it being set at Halloween
